Paolo Borghi was born in 1983 in a small town in the Emilia Romagna area, Italy. Starting out as a carpenter, an expert in the building and designing of stairs and other tailor-made woodwork projects. He went on to graduate from CETOM, Florence, in music therapy in 2013, and he turned his talent and skillful hands to playing the Hang instrument.
For many years he has continued to search for peculiar and unusual instruments, more times than not he’s made his own instruments, such as Tubular Bells, Flamenco, Cuban Cajóns, Tongue Drums, and other percussion instruments. He used plywood to substitute animal skin or fur and other instruments were made from salvaged or recycled material.
He has always been extremely keen on road art and animation, nurturing a strong passion for music, in particular percussion. He has played with various percussion, dance and theatre companies.
His biggest passion is for the Hang instrument; a metallic percussion invented by two Swiss craftsmen, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer. Paolo Borghi bought his Hang in Bern, Switzerland in April 2007, choosing from 30 different instruments. His talent is unmatched in Italy, currently the owner of 4 different varieties of the Hang instrument, each varying in key and production date.
Apart from the Hang, Paolo plays other instruments; Vietnamese Jew harp, West African Djembè, Tibetan Singing Bowls, Gong, Tubular bells (or Chimes), Sansula, Didgeridoo and his self-made percussions. He has always strived to synchronize his sound with his own internal well being and that of others.
In February and May 2012 he participated in the TV talent show ‘Italia’s Got Talent’ on Canale 5 (Chanel 5). Competing against different Hang players, he received tremendous praise and success from the critics and the public, going through to the finals. For the finale of another TV series presented by Maria De Filippi, “Amici”, he played with the Annalisa Scarrone orchestra during the performance of the circus performer Devin De Bianchi.
In 2012 he was invited to represent Italy at various Notte Bianca (White Night), prestigious evenings in Italy, in places like Florence and Rovigo.
